Bidgely announced today the commercial availability of its energy analytics platform and the $3M Series A investment from Khosla Ventures. Bidgely’s platform provides an appliance-level itemization of electrical bills that uniquely enables utilities to engage their residential consumers with specific and actionable insights, recommendations, and savings on their energy bills. The first-of-its-kind recommendation engine uses big-data algorithms that disaggregate energy use and mash detailed appliance level insights into individual user’s social and behavioral profiles. Notable in its non-intrusive, software-based approach, Bidgely’s platform relies solely on smart utility meters and standard home area network gateways that have already been installed.

“Residential energy efficiency is a major untapped source of energy and Bidgely realizes this with its disruptive disaggregation technology. Consumers can see their energy consumption by appliance-similar to their phone or credit card bills. It is a fundamental change in the way people receive energy information that enables them to make informed decisions,” says Vinod Khosla, Founding Partner at Khosla Ventures. Research published by ACEEE and others has shown that 4-12% of household energy savings can be achieved across a large number of households with analytics similar to that available from Bidgely (compared to 1-2% of current programs)

“How can anything be called Smart unless it is capable of learning?” says Abhay Gupta, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bidgely, “Bidgely puts Smart in Smart Meters by turning AMI and HAN installations into Learning systems, delivering value through actionable insights and user-specific commitments.” “Today, consumers have social motivators, such as neighborhood comparison reports, but lack tools to help them make informed energy-saving decisions. The tools that exist today, such as plug level sensors and in-home displays, are either expensive or powerful, and do not provide a clear indication of where the energy is being wasted. We make it much more convenient and cost-effective by performing real-time analyzes of Smart Meter data in the cloud and providing consumers with useful insights through web and mobile apps. And all of this is achieved without any plug level sensors inside the home. “That’s right.

“At this junction in history, we are facing a number of looming energy problems First, significant low-cost energy cuts can be made in the residential sector, but these savings have not been achieved to date. Second, billions of dollars are spent on the installation of Smart Meters, yet the energy savings and financial benefits of this infrastructure-without careful consideration of the human element-will not reach its full potential. These problems can be addressed through strategic marriage using Energy Disaggregation,” says Carrie Armel at Stanford’s Precourt Energy Efficiency Center (PEEC) Bidgely is working with Stanford PEEC to unlock residential energy efficiency through disaggregation technology and behavior science research.

The first commercially available product from Bidgely analyzes data from Smart Meter collected through the Home Area Network (HAN) Future products will analyze 15 minutes or 1 hour interval Smart Meter data collected through the Advanced Metering Infrastructure Utility (AMI) network.

Bidgely to consumers:
In addition to being available as a ground-breaking consumer engagement solution for utilities, the Bidgely platform can be used directly by consumers who have access to their entire home energy consumption data either through the ZigBee HAN gateways or the Do-It-Yourself energy monitors.
